From Haslem Park to the Last Whistle Café.

Lancaster Canal: Bridges 13 – 17

On a Bank Holiday Monday there is no better place to be than the towpath on a quiet stretch of the Lancaster Canal.  OK, so there might be a narrowboat or two, and perhaps some fishermen and maybe even a few dog-walkers.  Nothing to compare to the inevitable traffic jams and people jams in the many places around here so popular for day trips.

A ten minute drive towards the city of Preston brought us to Haslem Park, from where the Lancaster Canal can be accessed at Savick House by Bridge 13.

On the other side  are houses with gardens backing on to the canal:

I think we saw three fishermen along the towpath and two narrowboats:

We were ready for an ice cream so were pleased to discover the Last Whistle Café…..

…….and were extremely sad that it was closed today:

By this time (a)we were thirsty, (b)we had walked for an hour from bridge 13 to bridge 17 and (c)the sun was shining.  Three good reasons to turn around and head back, hopefully to sit out in the garden and have a coffee.

I am very much looking forward to the next “Four Bridge Walk”. I wonder which stretch of the canal that will be.

Only about 136 more bridges to see. At 4 bridges per walk, that’s a good few more walks!
